MESA Founder and Faculty Member

Donald J. Murphy, M.D., a board-certified geriatrician, co-founded Senior Care of Colorado, PC, in 2000. Over the course of ten years, the practice grew against all odds from six to 70 clinicians, serving elderly Coloradoans in six outpatient clinics, more than 250 subacute care units, assisted living and long-term care facilities, and in patients’ homes throughout the Denver Metro and other areas of Colorado. In December 2010, the practice was acquired by IPC The Hospitalist Company, and Murphy continued as the Practice Group Leader through the end of 2012.

Today, in addition to his ongoing geriatric clinical practice at Rocky Mountain Senior Care,  he serves in a variety of roles including Medical Director, Medicare Services, for Colorado Access and Medical Director for  Halcyon Hospice & Palliative Care.

In 2008, Murphy envisioned The Colorado M.E.S.A. (“Medicare Experts/Senior Access”) Initiative, an innovative project aimed at increasing access to primary care for Colorado seniors through educating primary care providers throughout the state. This collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter was funded by the Colorado Health Foundation, The Kaiser Permanente Foundation, and Caring for Colorado. Today, Dr. Murphy and Rocky Mountain Senior Care sponsor M.E.S.A. so it’s work can continue, supporting providers who care for seniors.

Dr. Murphy is a graduate of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where he received his Medical Degree and completed his Internal Medicine residency. He was a Geriatric Fellow at Harvard Medical School and his research interests include developing guidelines for appropriate end of life care for seniors. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter and the Colorado Health Foundation.

Murphy, who describes himself as “a country doctor who just happens to be working in a metropolitan area,” has received many honors and awards related to clinical teaching; he has also been voted, by his physician peers, one of the top geriatricians in 5280 Magazine’s annual “Denver’s Top Doctors” issue over multiple years. He is the author of Honest Medicine and numerous journal articles.
